Like iron, manganese is often found naturally in groundwater. Manganese can form precipitation in eg pipes and give discolored (black) water which can cause stains on textiles when washing.
What is manganese?
Manganese is a gray-white metallic element that resembles iron. It occurs naturally in the bedrock and spreads via the groundwater.
What level is acceptable?
The regulated levels will always shift between different countries and decision makers. In Sweden, the Swedish EPA gives a water remark at levels above 0,30 mg/l.
How do I know I have manganese in my water?
Signs that you have manganese in your water are that you get black / gray discolorations on whitewash, on shower walls etc. Problems with manganese often occur in combination with high levels of iron.
Is it dangerous to drink water with manganese in it?
Too much manganese can be toxic and affect the nervous system, but the body has its own regulatory system so that only as much as is necessary gets absorbed from what we eat and drink. In young children, this system is not fully developed and they are therefore at greater risk of ingesting too high levels of manganese.
Bluewater machines remove over 99% of manganese in your water.
