Nitrate

Nitrates in your water indicate that it is affected by sewage water, fertilization or other pollution.

What is nitrate?

Nitrate is a naturally occurring ion (NO₃⁻) found in soil, water, and food. In drinking water, elevated nitrate levels are most commonly caused by agricultural runoff and fertilizers, sewage contamination, or the natural dissolution of nitrate-bearing rocks and soils. Water softening through ion exchange with sodium can also raise nitrate concentrations.

What level is acceptable?

Acceptable nitrate levels vary by country. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Union set a maximum limit of 50 mg/l in drinking water. In Sweden, the Swedish EPA flags water quality as a concern at levels above 20 mg/l and considers water unfit to drink at levels above 50 mg/l. Always check your local authority's guidelines, as national standards may differ. 

Is it dangerous to drink water with nitrate in it?

High nitrate levels in drinking water can be dangerous, especially for infants under six months old and pregnant women. In the body, nitrate is converted to nitrite, which interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen — a condition known as methemoglobinemia (or "blue baby syndrome" in infants). Adults with certain health conditions may also be at increased risk. If nitrate levels in your water are above recommended limits, seek an alternative water source.
