Radon

Radon is a radioactive gas that is tasteless and odorless, it is formed when the radioactive element radium decomposes.

How do I know I have radon in my water?

Because radon is tasteless and odorless, it is not possible to know if you have radon in water without doing a radon analysis.

Radon occurs mainly in deep drilled wells and has no smell, taste or color. If you suspect that radon is present in the bedrock and you have a deep drilled well, you should perform a radon analysis on your water.

What level is acceptable?

The regulated levels will always shift between different countries and decision makers. In Sweden, the Swedish EPA marks a water unfit to drink at levels above 1000 Bq/l.

Is it dangerous to drink water with radon in it?

Do not drink water with radon in it!

You should NOT drink water with radon. There is a risk of health effects. You should also not clean vegetables or other foods in such water. The greatest risk of health effects is if you inhale radon-containing air, for example if you shower or flush taps.

Radon from water, together with radon from soil and building materials, can give high concentrations in the residential air. In a property, the content can be reduced by aeration in radon separators or by other methods. To avoid increases in radon levels indoors, exhaust gas must be diverted away from the home.

Do Bluewater machines remove radon?

Yes and no. Since radon is a gas it is normally not removed by reverse osmosis, you need an aeration device to completely remove radon. But this will depend upon the individual size of the radon molecule. In general, Bluewater purifiers removes 60% of radon in water.
